NEW DELHI, AUG. 10. Hailed as a milestone in Delhi University's examination system, the internal assessment scheme that was meant to reduce the load and academic pressure of students seems to be doing just the opposite for some students, with complaints of discrepancy in the scores now trickling in. A day after Delhi University announced the results of the first year B.Com (Pass) examination, some students of Zakir Husain College complained of a mistake in their internal assessment scores, with at least two students receiving a zero in the internals of their Hindi paper. The students will make a representation to the University on Wednesday. As of now standing third in his course, Navneet Kumar is currently short of seven marks to be the topper in the course in his college. An achievement he believes was made impossible because of the zero that he received in his Hindi internals. Incidentally, he scored 49 out of 75 in his main paper. "I have scored 91 in Accounts, 67 in Business Studies and 59 in Economics. In fact, my score in the Hindi paper is not bad either. Some of my other classmates too have been awarded single-digit scores in their Hindi internals. My aggregate is 65 per cent right now I was always a topper in my internals and it is difficult for me to believe that I could get a zero in a subject,'' said an angry Navneet. The students said they had spoken to their teachers on Tuesday to ensure that the scores sent by the college were not the same. "Our teacher assured that all of us were given a score of at least 15 marks. So why the University decided to award us a zilch is mystery to us. We are hoping to present a request to the Vice-Chancellor tomorrow to get the matter solved,'' Navneet said. According to the Dean of Students Welfare and Gargi College Principal, Hema Raghavan, no complaints have been received by the DSW or the college so far regarding an error in marking. But a computer error is not ruled out. The need to compare and study the scores of the internals with the main examination by the University has been one of the main reasons for the delay in the announcements of results of first year results on the campus this year. "The University had asked all the colleges to send them a copy of the question paper given in the internal examination to ensure that the marking system used was right. But from what we know many colleges have not sent their question papers to the University, `' said Dr. Raghavan.
