Suraj knocks out Navneeth

By Our Special Correspondent

MYSORE, AUG. 11. Southpaw Suraj Bikkanavar of Karnataka knocked out second-seeded Navneeth Kannan of Tamil Nadu 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 in the first round of the boys' under-18 singles in the AITA Talent Series tennis championship (for under-14 and under-18) at Mysore Tennis Club courts here on Wednesday.

In a well-contested encounter, marked by long rallies, Suraj, who led 4-1 in the first set, lost the grip and allowed his rival to square it at six all before Navneeth prevailed in the tie-breaker.

In the second set, Suraj raced to a 5-2 lad before Navneeth hit back to level at 5-all and later pushed the set into another tie-breaker. Suraj took a 6-1 lead, but Navneeth fought back to tie at six all. However, Suraj held his nerve to take it at 9-7.
