LEMUR (RANGA REDDY DT), AUG. 12. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has exhorted people to take up tree plantation in a big way and ensure regular care of the saplings.Speaking after launching the 55th `Vanamahotsavam', organised by the Forest Department at Patamati Kancha reserve forest block adjoining this village in Kandukur mandal, 25 km from Hyderabad, on Thursday, Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy, said deforestation was the root cause of the evils plaguing people. Farmers and the general public did not know when it would rain as the deforestation had led to deficit rainfall. He called for commitment on part of people to make the programme a success and said that monsoon was the right season to take up the campaign in a big way.
For making bio-diesel
The Minister for Forests, Satrucharla Vijaya Rama Raju, said that Forest Department was encouraging farmers to take up Pongamia and Jatropa cultivation to produce bio-diesel. Mr. Vijaya Rama Raju, said the Government had identified deficit rainfall areas where Pongamia plants would be raised while Jatropa plants were planned in dry lands. Government was extending financial assistance to the farmers keen on taking up cultivation of the two plants, the Forest Minister said. He said the Government was confident that in the long run, cultivation of Pongamia and Jatropa seedlings would provide employment to the farmers and unemployed youth.
Public support sought
The Minister for Mines and Geology, Sabitha Indra Reddy, and the Ibrahimpatnam MLA, M.P.Narasimha, spoke. Earlier, the Chief Minister on his arrival from a tour of Nalgonda district, planted a Pongamia seedling. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, S.K. Das, the Principal Secretary, EFS&T Department, T. Chatterjee and Chief Conservator of Forests (social Forestry), S.V. Kumar, were present.
