Alappuzha
By Our Staff Reporter
ALAPPUZHA, AUG. 12. The Kerala Spinners, a joint sector company here which has been lying closed for more than a year, will be reopened soon, the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, has said. Inaugurating a cultural meeting organised here today in connection with the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, the Minister said Government representatives had held telephonic discussions with the managing director of the company on the issue. The final talks with the private group that holds the major share of the company would be held at Mumbai soon, he said. Earlier, the Alappuzha MLA, K.C. Venugopal, in a memorandum, urged the Minister to take steps to reopen the Kerala Spinners, and provide financial assistance to workers of the Alappuzha port which had stopped functioning in 1985. The Minister promised to consider favourably the demand for assistance to the port workers. He said a master plan for the development of Alappuzha was in the offing. Festivals like the Nehru Trophy Boat Race would have a significant role in the development plan, he added. C.S. Sujata, MP, offered felicitations. The District Collector, K.M. Ramanandan, distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions organised in connection with the boat race.
