Rajagopal criticises relaxation of norms

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 12. The former Union Minister and BJP leader, O. Rajagopal, today criticised the Central Government's decision to allow multi-port entry for import of natural rubber.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Rajagopal said that rubber import was limited through two ports by the then Union Commerce Minister, Murasoli Maran, as a way to circumvent the stipulations of the WTO agreement, under which a total ban on import of natural rubber could not be imposed. He said that the late Maran had worked out this strategy after he had taken up the issue with him. The strategy behind limiting rubber imports through two ports was indented to be a disincentive for tyre manufacturers located in Delhi, Haryana and Mumbai, as the landed costs would have made rubber imports uneconomical.

He alleged that the Congress-led Government was aiding the powerful tyre manufacturers' lobby much to the detrimental interests of the Kerala rubber cultivators.
