Dola, Sumangala and Reena qualify

ATHENS, AUG. 12. Indian women archers — Dola Bannerjee, Sumangala Sharma and Reena Kumari — made it to the preliminary round at the Dekelia Air Force Base here on Thursday morning.

Dola totalled 643 (326/12 and 317/20), while Sumangala Sharma aggregated 638 (319/25 and 319/14).

Dola was placed 13th on the board while Sumangala at 28.

The third Indian, Reena Kumari collected 620 (311/44 and 309/34) to finish at 43rd.

All the 64 competitors qualified for the opening round.

Dola will take on Kirstin Jean Lewis of South Africa in the first round. It is expected that Lewis will not pose a big threat to Dola.

Sumangala, however, will face good resistance from Chen Liju in the opening round. Reena Kumari will meet Kirstine Esebua of Georgia.

Meanwhile, Korean archers, headed by Park Sung Hyunput, put up a good display.

The combined score of the Koreans — Park, Lee Sung Jin and Yun Mi Jin — was 2030, beating the record set by their team-mates in Sydney by 36 points. The Indian women totalled 1900 points.

The main round competition will be held at the historic Panathinaiko Stadium from August 15. — Our Special Correspondent
