The task force will be headed by the Chairman of the Central Water Commission and will have representatives from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Bihar, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh as members. Others who will be on the panel include members from National Hydro Power Corporation, Planning Commission, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Waste Resources.
There will be two non-official members, R. Rangachari, an expert on Flood Control and Chandra Maouli, an Assistant Professor from Guwahati
The terms of reference of the task force are to look into the causes of flood and bank erosion in the north-east, Bihar, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh and what has been the effects of measures taken for flood control.
The task force will recommend institutional arrangements for short-term and long-term measures of flood control in the region. It will submit its report by December 31.
The Ministry of Water Resources will be the nodal agency for monitoring the functioning of the Task Force. The formation of the task force was announced by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, last week after he visited Assam and Bihar.
