GUNTUR, AUG. 12. Streamlining of land records and equitable distribution of available land were the core issues raised by speakers at the first `Praja assembly' organised by the People's War here on Thursday. The assembly was supported by several people's organisations.
`Distribute land'
Oppression of Dalits, backward and other marginalised classes was traced back to their lack of land holdings. In its resolution, the `assembly' recommended immediate distribution of land pattas to Dalits for the lands they occupied. The large amount of banjar lands with the State Government should also be distributed among people of these classes, the resolution said.
Next meet in Vizag
A similar meeting would be organised at Visakhapatnam on Saturday. The agenda of the meeting was to discuss the living conditions of Dalits and the downtrodden, and recommend solutions. Dalit leaders from the district, like Perni Bhushnam, observed that naxalism was about fighting against Dalit oppression and campaigning for rights. A copy of the outcome of the meeting is to be submitted to the State Government and the state committee of the People's War. Speakers said a number of poor and Dalit prisoners had landed in jails due to injustice done to them and their inability to seek speedy justice. Demanding a thorough revision of the judicial system, they said it was heavily in favour of richer sections of society. The Praja Assembly was presided over by D. Prabhakar of the Kulanirmulana Porata Samiti.
