Accept EC's challenge: Vasan

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, AUG. 12. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K. Vasan, today asked the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to accept the challenge thrown by the Chief Election Commissioner to prove her charge that electronic voting machines (EVM) used in the May 10 Lok Sabha election could be tampered with.

In a statement here, Mr. Vasan said the CEC, who refuted her charge, had also said the Commission was ready to provide her any EVMs, which were used in the election to prove her charge. Mr. Vasan said the Chief Minister's "wild statement" against the EVMs, which were successfully used by the Commission since 1998, would only weaken democracy.
