Fazeela's death triggers protests

By Our Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM, AUG. 12. A march taken out by activists of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) to the Jamia Nadvia Arts and Science College at Edavanna here to protest against the death of Fazeela, a student of the self-financing college, turned violent today.

25 hurt

The police had to resort to a lathicharge to disperse the agitators. At least 25 persons, including 20 SFI and DYFI activists, were injured in clashes between the protesters and the police.

The SFI district president, Subash Chandran, has been admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital with serious injuries. The others have been admitted to the Manjeri District Hospital. Six students who were taken into custody by the police, were also shifted to the hospital.

Students' clash

The trouble started when around 150 SFI activists marched to the college from Champkunnu at 11 a.m. At the same time, another group of students, allegedly Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists, also arrived to protest against the death of Fazeela. Clashes broke out between the activists of these two student organisations.
