CHANDIGARH, AUG. 12. The Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, today hit out at the Centre for making a meagre increase of only Rs. 10 per quintal in the minimum support price for paddy. Mr. Chautala said the Congress-led UPA Government had played a cruel joke on the hard working farmers of the country. He argued that the farming community had already been hard pressed because of repeated increases in the prices of diesel and other inputs. Also, the long dry spell had already made its impact felt. He demanded that MSP for paddy should be fixed at Rs. 680 per quintal for common variety, Rs.700 per quintal for fine and Rs.730 per quintal for superfine variety. He alleged that the Congress Government had never made any considerable hike in the MSP of foodgrains. He said he had already written a demi-official letter to the Union Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar, urging him that the MSP for paddy be fixed at Rs. 680 per quintal for common variety, Rs.700 per quintal for fine and Rs.730 per quintal for superfine variety.
