Visakhapatnam
By Our Special Correspondent
VISAKHAPATNAM, AUG. 12. The Bharatiya Janata Party will contest all the 50 Wards of the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (VMC) in the ensuing elections, the State BJP president, N. Indrasena Reddy, said here on Wednesday. Addressing the office-bearers of the city BJP unit, he advised them to identify the party candidates for all the 50 Wards. In this context, he recalled that the previous National Democratic Alliance Government had sanctioned several developmental works in Visakhapatnam like expansion of the airport runway to facilitate landing of bigger aircraft.
Works highlighted
When the party leader, Bandaru Dattatreya, was the Railway Minister, the sixth platform of Visakhapatnam Railway Station and the new foot over bridge were constructed, while Rs.2 crores was released for the cathlab at the King George Hospital, Mr. Reddy stated. Apart from these, 6,700 houses were sanctioned under the VAMBAY scheme which are now under construction, while the Rs.1,300 crore of debt of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant was converted into equity to save VSP, he pointed out. ``The BJP will contest the VMC elections by reminding the people of all these activities taken up by the previous Vajpayee Government which bestowed special attention to Visakhapatnam in the past,'' he said.
Centre criticised
On the other hand, the recent general and railway budget of the United Progressive Alliance Government had nothing for the port-cum-steel city, Mr. Reddy said and remarked that though there were two Congress Working Committee members from the city, they did precious little. The BJP president announced that the State BJP treasurer, Veeramachaneni Ranga Prasad, has been nominated incharge of the party affairs for the VMC elections and he would tour the city extensively. He added that special focus was on the choice of the BJP's Mayoral candidate. The city BJP president, Bandaru Rangamohana Rao, chaired the meeting.
