VIJAYAWADA, AUG.12. The State has achieved 97.25 per cent of the targeted 32 lakh artificial insemination operations on cattle last year. This year too, a similar target has been fixed and 7,97 lakh operations had already been taken up, the Additional Director of the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, Mohd. Nissar Hussain, said at the State level review meeting of the department here on Thursday. In Krishna district, 2.55 lakh such operations were performed as against the targeted 2.75 lakh, in the last financial year. This year in the district 60,500 operations had already been performed. He said the insemination programmes were made successful with the help of 1,713 Gopal Mitras in the State. Mr. Hussain said vaccine and medicines for combating `chitukum' disease among sheep in Karimnagar, Kadapa, Kurnool and Nalgonda were already sent. Following the `galikuntu' disease among cattle in Vizianagaram, the department rushed the vaccine at 50 per cent subsidy, he pointed out. Later the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, G. Surya Rao, in an informal talk with reporters said the Government would make serious efforts to improve the cattle population in the State. He pointed out that a small country like Brazil with a human population of 17 crore boasts of 15 crore cattle population. Stating that the Government proposed to start another veterinary college in the State, he said orders have been issued for recruiting 150 more veterinary doctors in the department.
