Dairy industry high on priority list: Minister

By Our Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA, AUG.12. The Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, Gollapalli Surya Rao, said that the Government would give high priority to development of livestock and dairy production in the State.

Participating in a State-level review meeting of the departmental officials here on Thursday, the Minister asked the officials to come forward with suggestions and problems confronting the department, so that necessary remedial measures could be taken. Funds would not be a constraint for the purpose, he added.

Pointing out that a rich cattle wealth could play a key role in the development of the country, Mr. Rao, in a philosophical tone, complimented the services of the veterinary doctors, surgeons and officials for taking care of the animals.

"Only very few people get the opportunity to serve animals. And God has gifted you with this enviable task," he remarked, amidst applause.

He, however, urged the senior officials of the department to motivate the lower level field staff for taking proper care of the animals in the interior villages. Mr. Rao said that though a majority of the staff were working wholeheartedly, there were still complaints of indifference from certain places, which needed to be addressed promptly.

The Additional Director, Animal Husbandry, Mohd Nissar Hussain, said that barring the districts of East Godavari, West Godavari, Prakasam and Khammam, the rest of the State had achieved "A grade" in the field of artificial insemination.

He said the Central Government had earmarked about Rs. 40 crores for undertaking the artificial insemination programmes and breeding operations in the State. Out of this Rs 27.36 crore had already been spent, he said.

Mr. Hussain, however, said the State lacked sufficient storage facilities for vaccines and felt that there was a need for the Government to create the necessary infrastructure. The department's director, R. Mohan Rao, joint directors and deputy directors of the various districts participated in the meeting.
