NEW DELHI, AUG. 12. Offering all possible help to provide succour and relief to the flash flood-hit people of Gujarat, the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, today announced a Central assistance of Rs. 55 crores to the State from the National Calamity Contingency Fund. Dr. Singh has also sanctioned Rs. 50,000 each from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to the next of kin of those killed in the recent floods in Gujarat. ``In view of the damage cased by flash floods in Gujarat, a sum of Rs. 55 crores will be released under the National Calamity Contingency Fund as an advance,'' the Prime Minister said in a statement here. As an interim measure, Rs. five crores would be provided by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, as an advance of the final assessment of expenditure to restore National Highways, he said. A Central team, including representatives from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, will visit the State a week after a memorandum was received from the State Government. Sharing the anguish and distress of the people of Gujarat who saw their State move from the ravages of drought to flash floods, Dr. Singh said on hearing the news, he immediately called the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, and offered all possible emergency assistance to the State.
