11-month-old with heart disease dies

HYDERABAD, AUG. 12. The spate of deaths of children with malfunctioning hearts continued in Hyderabad on Thursday, with 11-month-old Ruchita from Mahbubnagar district passing away at the Care Hospitals here.

Multiple defects

The daughter of Yadaiah of Kolukupally village, Ruchita is the ninth child with Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) to die in the last six days, T. Sobhan of Karimnagar being the first on August 7. She is also the fifth child to die at Care Hospitals after K. Saidulu of Nalgonda died on Sunday.

The baby girl, who was admitted on Thursday, was suffering from multiple defects, according to a Care Hospital bulletin. A combination of Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) - a hole in the wall of the heart that causes flooding of blood in the lungs, Tricuspid Atresia, the third most common form of CHD and a Ventricular Septal Defect, the most common CHD, caused her death.

Kids being discharged

Meanwhile, several hospitals have started discharging the children they admitted after August 7. The Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences has discharged 18 out of the 48 admitted. Three children here are recovering after undergoing surgery; the remaining are said to be stable.

Rainbow Hospitals has discharged 12 of the 15 admitted, with one of the remaining three being shifted to Global Hospitals. One of the other two was inoperable, the hospital said.

At Global Hospitals, one child out of the 13 admitted has been discharged after surgery. The hospital's vice-president (medical services), Veera Prasad, said two surgeries were performed on Wednesday while one each was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Image hospitals, where 47 were admitted, are also planning to start surgeries in a phased manner from Saturday.

Two babies admitted

Care Hospitals, where two babies were admitted today, have given surgery dates to 20 patients. The two admitted today are two-day-old Nuzhat Fathima from Pisalbanda near Kanchanbagh and 40-day-old Aruna of Shankarapalli in Rangareddy district.
