BCCI draws flak for calling bids on telecast rights
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI,
AUG. 13.
The Consumers Association of India (CAI), a Chennai-based body, has urged the Centre to enact a law to ensure free broadcasting and telecasting of all major sporting events in the country.
R. Desikan, CAI trustee, told presspersons today that similar laws existed in Australia, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The suggestion was made in the context of reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India had floated bids for telecasting and broadcasting licence for international cricket and first-class domestic cricket matches to be played in the country from October 1, 2004 to September 30, 2008.
Mr. Desikan said there was a possibility of the people in the country being denied free viewing of the cricket matches.
Asked whether he would seek judicial intervention against the BCCI move, he said he would do so if such action were endorsed by legal advice.
