HYDERABAD, AUG. 13. The Andhra Pradesh State branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded equitable and justifiable representation to Andhra Pradesh in the Medical Council of India (MCI). Andhra Pradesh has only three representatives in the MCI, one of which is lying vacant, against ten before the establishment of the NTR University of Health Sciences. Small States like Goa, Delhi and Haryana have three representatives each, while Madhya Pradesh has 11 and Uttar Pradesh 12. It is this unequal representation and lack of an effective say for Andhra Pradesh in the MCI that is leading to recurrent problems for the State in MBBS and post-graduate medical courses, the IMA secretary, Gutta Suresh, said in a press release here on Friday. The MCI has found some lacunae in Government medical collages, some of which have been in existence for over 50 years, and reduced 270 MBBS seats. The IMA had represented to the State Government and the Centre to rectify the imbalance in the Medical Council of India but to no avail, the release added.
