ELURU, AUG. 13. The Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Dasari Narayana Rao, on Friday said adoption of cutting-edge technology is on the anvil to promote safety. Speaking at a meet-the-press programme here, the Minister expressed the hope that the rate of accidents in mines could be brought down to a great extent by adopting the latest technologies. He said the Government had decided to depute a high-level team from the Union Ministry of Coal and Mines to Australia and China to study the feasibility and efficacy of the technology being adopted in those countries to prevent disasters in mining. Underground mining was more vulnerable to accidents, compared with opencast mining. Roof collapse and landslip were found to be major reasons for accidents in mining, Mr Narayana Rao explained. The Minister disclosed that the Union Government had constituted a high-powered committee on introduction of a single-window system for issue of licences for mining. The move was intended to ensure that the applications seeking licences were cleared through a single agency in a stipulated period of four months, he added.
