NEW DELHI, AUG. 13 . The Congress today sought to downplay the issuance of a non-bailable warrant against the Union Minister, Mohammed Taslimuddin, stating that it pertained to a case filed by a private complainant. The party spokesperson, Anand Sharma, said that the complainant had sought to take back the criminal complaint but was not allowed to do so and a warrant was issued against the Minister for whom the legal route was open. Responding to the demand by the Bharatiya Janata Party seeking his dismissal, Mr. Sharma said the approach was "nothing new."
BJP demands arrest
By K. Balchand PATNA Aug. 13. The Bharatiya Janata Party today submitted a memorandum to the Governor, M. Rama Jois, demanding a direction to the DGP to arrest the Union Minister of State for Agriculture, Md. Taslimuddin. It alleged that the police had not executed a non-bailable arrest warrant against him. The BJP team included the party's national vice-president and MP, S.K. Modi, and the State unit chief, G.N. Singh. They alleged that the court had issued not only arrest warrants against him but also orders to attach his property in connection with an attempt to murder case in Araria in 1999. Mr. Modi, who claimed to have the relevant papers, had sent the same to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, and the Rajya Sabha Chairman, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, urging them to use their good offices to ask Mr. Taslimuddin to submit himself to the judicial process. Mr. Modi maintained that the BJP would stall the Parliament if Mr. Taslimuddin did not resign by August 16 when it resumed its proceedings.
