BJP Chief Ministers' conclave next month

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, AUG. 13. All Chief Ministers of the Bharatiya Janata Party will be meeting here with the party's central leadership on September 11 and 12. The decision for such a meet was taken in Goa at the party's `chintan baithak.'

The brain-storming session decided that the performance of the party's State Governments should be evaluated and steps taken to ``make the Governments more popular.''

The party president, Venkaiah Naidu, had earlier said that the BJP Chief Ministers would be encouraged to exchange notes and learn from each other. The idea was to promote ``best practices in governance.'' At the Goa session, the leadership had decided to discuss in detail the performance of each of the party's Governments and set up a ``guidance mechanism at the national level.''

To evaluate performance

Another topic of discussion would be how to improve the fiscal health of these Governments. Finally, at a later stage, the party intends to evaluate the performance of its State Ministers and MLAs.

The party has also set up a five-member committee headed by the former Human Resource Development Minister, Murli Manohar Joshi, to study the ``infiltration'' problem and submit a report on this to the party president.

Other members of this committee are: Arun Shourie, Sushil Modi, Tathagat Ray and Indramoni Bora.
