Yechuri calls on Chief Minister

Hyderabad: The CPI(M) Politbureau member, Sitaram Yechuri, called on the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here on Friday. "It is a courtesy call," party sources said. Mr. Yechuri was closeted with Dr. Reddy for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, a delegation of leaders of the Left parties--MCPI, SUCI, CPI(ML) and ML Committee--called on the Chief Minister and presented a memorandum to him on distribution of land to the poor in rural areas. The leaders urged him to invite their parties to the all-party meeting convened by the Government.

Sanitary worker ends life,

upset over termination?

Kakinada: G. Pothuraju (30), a sanitary worker on contract in Government general hospital here, allegedly committed suicide by running in front of Circar Express near Perrajupet railway gate on Friday morning. His relatives attributed the motive for the extreme step to serving of an order by the hospital authorities terminating his service from Saturday. However, the Superintendent of the hospital, S. Rajkumar, clarified that termination was not the reason for the alleged suicide but the worker was having domestic problems.

Two more die of mystery disease

VIZIANAGARAM: Two more persons have died of mysterious disease at Regulapadu and Pedapaduvalasa, hamlets in Kooneru panchayat of Mentada mandal, raising the toll to four in the last five days. According to reports, Ingilapalli Vasanta (45) and Dumbiri Sriram (40) died on Froday morning after complaining of stomach pain followed by vomiting. Eleven others with similar symptoms were shifted to the hospital, according to the Challapeta Medical Officer, Aruna Kumari.

Heavy generation at Srisailam

Hyderabad: With heavy inflows continuing, the Andhra Pradesh Genco on Friday pressed into service six units of the left bank tunnel powerhouse at Srisailam in addition to three on the right. This was the first time that all the six units were run simultaneously. The combined generation was 1,230 MW and the output around 25 million units, the Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, said. The reservoir, which touched 870 ft mark, was receiving an inflow of 1.7 lakh cusecs. The Principal Secretary, Energy, D.K. Panwar, said two units at Kothagudem and one each at Muddanur and Vijayawada, were allowed to go in for annual maintenance works.

New mines in 16 areas: Dasari

VIJAYAWADA: New mines would be opened at 16 areas in the Singareni Collieries to meet the increasing demand for coal, the Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Dasari Narayana Rao, said here on Friday. He said thought demand for coal was on the rise, production was not adequate. The Minister said there was a need for enhancing wages of miners. Mr. Rao said geological explorations were being conducted for gold in Anantapur, Cuddapah and Chittoor districts.

Reimburse scholarships: TDP

HYDERABAD: Decrying poor allocations for the weaker sections welfare, the Telugu Desam Party has asked the Government to reimburse the scholarship amount due to students. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the former Ministers -- T. Seetaram, J.R. Pushparaj and P. Chandrasekhar -- and the Ponnur MLA, D. Narendra Kumar, lashed out at the Government for reducing the outlay for the weaker sections.

Discom chiefs' term extended

Hyderabad: The Government has extended the term of P. Gopala Reddy and K. Ranganatham, Managing Directors of the Andhra Pradesh northern power distribution company and the southern distribution company respectively by one year.

CPI activist hacked to death

WARANGAL: An activist of the Communist Party of India (CPI), Md. Liyakhat Ali (40), was hacked to death by two persons at his home in Kuravi under Mahabubabad police station limits on Friday. The Additional Superintendent of Police, P. Viswa Prasad, said the duo called out Ali to settle a dispute. They axed and stabbed him indiscriminately even as they ignored appeals of Ali's family members to spare him.

Poster against ragging released

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Friday released a poster brought out by the State committee of Students Federation of India against ragging. In a statement, B. Prasad, SFI president, said the poster was brought out keeping in view of the rising cases of ragging and eve-teasing. He appealed to students to participate in large numbers in the awareness campaign against the menace.

`Jaitra Yatra' book released

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Friday released a book, `Jaitra Yatra,' on the padayatra undertaken by him prior to the Assembly election. The book is written by M. Venkatappa Reddy and published by the Vishishta Foundation. The sale proceeds of the book would be donated to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for providing treatment to children suffering from heart ailment, Mr. Reddy said.

Metpalli records 6 cm rainfall

Hyderabad: The impact of the low pressure area ended on Friday when the system moved inland and lay over Jharkhand. It is likely to dissipate. Metpalli recorded a rainfall of 6 cm. Dundigal and Coonavaram recorded 5 cm each and Bhadrachalam and Yellandu 4 cm each. There will be light to moderate rain on Saturday at a few places in coastal Andhra and Telangana.

Union Bank of India CMD's visit

KARIMNAGAR: The Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Union Bank of India, V. Leeladhar, will be visiting Karimnagar on Saturday to participate in various programmes organised by the bank. In a press note here on Friday, the UBI branch manager, N. Srinivas, said that Mr. Leeladhar, who is also the chairman of Indian Banks Association, ould inaugurate the ATM facility at the UBI branch in Karimnagar. He will also participate in the credit linkage programme for farmers and women self-help groups at Padmanayaka kalyana mandapam and distribute loans to the tune of Rs. 1.5 crores.

NELLORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party has expressed concern over the stalemate pertaining to the proposed international leather park in Muttukur area of Nellore district. The foundation stone for the park was laid during the National Democratic Alliance Government's tenure. But now there was uncertainty about the project, the BJP said and demanded a clarification over the issue.

CUDDAPAH: The Cuddapah DSP, M. Ramprasada Rao, on Friday inaugurated the two-day Andhra Pradesh Inter-district 28th Men, 19th Women and second sub-junior weightlifting championship at Kalakshetram.

Speaking after lighting the lamp, the DSP asked women weightlifters to draw inspiration from Karanam Malleswari and win laurels. Regular practice was vital for weightlifters to improve their talent, he said and added that youth could secure jobs by excelling in the sport. The weightlifting coach, Basha Mohiuddin, also participated.

Rally by auto men

CUDDAPAH: Autorickshaw drivers took out a rally in Rajampet town on Friday demanding rollback of the petrol and diesel price hike.

They also staged dharna before the RDO's office and decried the steep hike in the prices of petrol and diesel. The CPI Rajampet Area Secretary, S.V. Subbarayudu, AITUC district vice-president, M.H. Rayudu, CITU leader, Subrahmanyam and Auto Workers Union leaders, S. Moula and R. Srinivas, demanded reduction in motor vehicle tax and insurance premia for autos.

Talking to mediapersons here on Friday, she said the Government had issued orders for giving 50 per cent subsidy on the total cost of the scheme..

CHITTOOR: Sanction of houses to 8,268 beneficiaries has been cancelled due to failure to undertake construction before the specified date, according to the district manager of the Housing Corporation, Sreeramulu. Talking to mediapersons on Friday, he said 216 houses were sanctioned to the district under the IAY scheme.

Man robbed

NELLORE: A motorcycle rider was robbed of about Rs. 4 lakhs near Gudur town on Thursday. According to information, he was called by some persons travelling in a car. They then snatched the cover containing the cash. Investigation is on.

House burgled

CUDDAPAH: Burglars stole two gold chains and Rs. 3,000 in cash by breaking into the house of a retired health officer, S. Venkatasubbaiah, in Railway Station road in Rajampet town early on Friday morning.

The inmates slept on the terrace when the theft was committed, according to the police. The Rajampet police registered a case.

Youth dies of snakebite

CUDDAPAH: A 28-year-old youth, Nallu Kondaiah, died of snakebite in agricultural fields in Kotha Pullur ST Colony in Khajipet mandal last evening. He was bitten by the snake when he went to water the fields and died on way to hospital.

Half-burnt body found

TIRUPATI: The Alipiri police found the half-burnt body of an unidentified person in bushes near Settipalle area on Renigunta road here on Thursday.

The legs of the person, believed to be around 40 years old, were tied with a lungi. The body was burnt with petrol. The police also found cuts on the neck and a hand. .

The DSP, K. Thimmappa, visited the spot.
