Coop. staff detain Registrar

By Our Correspondent

BHIMAVARAM, AUG. 13. The State Cooperative Registrar, D. Chakrapani, was detained for about three hours at Panchayat Raj guesthouse here on Friday by more than 200 personnel of District Central Cooperative Bank (DCCB) and cooperative credit societies of West Godavari district.

A strong posse of policemen who resorted to a mild lathicharge helped the Registrar leave the premises to a safer place amidst uproarious scenes even as the angry mob tried in vain to gherao the official.

Pelt stones

They pelted stones and threw chappals on the official's car in protest against the Government's reported announcement to retrench some employees and put a 35 per cent cut on salaries by implementing GOs 94 and 116(C) respectively.

After submitting a memorandum seeking revocation of the GOs, they detained the official by squatting on the premises and shouted slogans for two hours. Despite the Registrar's assurance of taking up the issue with the Government, the cooperative staff did not give in.

They attributed the financial crisis in the cooperative sector to the official's `handiwork.' They alleged that the GOs were issued at the behest of the Registrar.

Policemen arrested 50 personnel for staging rasta roko near the guest house for 15 minutes.
