VISAKHAPATNAM, AUG. 13. A naxalite under remand in the Central Prison here, Nayudu Nagarjuna Reddy, who had alleged that he was tortured and harassed by jail officials, was granted bail by a court in Vizianagaram. It was learnt here on Friday that the Additional Sessions Judge of Vizianagaram granted bail to Mr. Reddy on Thursday in a case registered by the Gummalakshmipuram police. He had been given bail in two other cases in the past, and would be released on bail after sureties were produced, according to the former Joint Secretary of the APCLC, Ganti Mohana Rao.
`Rules not followed'
The naxal was lodged in the Central Jail here 15 months ago for judicial remand after his arrest. While he should have been produced before the Mandal Revenue Officer, also the Mandal Executive Magistrate in Gummalakshmipuram once every 14 days for extension of the remand, he was produced on only seven occasions during this period, Mr. Mohana Rao said. Even on these occasions, the Mandal Executive Magistrate did not hold court, and so he had not seen the Mr. Reddy's condition, Mr. Mohana Rao said.
