Decision to hike FDI in telecom, insurance flayed

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, AUG. 13 . Speakers at a seminar on Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) held here on Friday criticised the Union Government's decision to increase FDI limits in telecom and insurance.

It may be recalled that the Union budget presented last month spoke of increasing the FDI limit in telecom from the current 49 per cent to 74 per cent and in the insurance sector from the current 26 per cent to 49 per cent.

`Strategic sectors'

The seminar was organised by the Institute of Social Thought. Speakers pointed out the drawbacks of allowing higher FDI in these "strategic" sectors.

They claimed that the previous NDA Government had had to postpone its decision regarding such an increase due to its fear that they would impact its electoral fortunes, and wondered why the Congress-led UPA Government was following the same "discredited policy."
