PONDICHERRY, AUG.14. The management of the Pondicherry Cooperative Sugar Mill at Lingareddipalayam near here will pay Rs. 910 for a tonne of cane supplied during the 2003-2004 crushing season by the farmers attached to the mill. The decision was reached at a meeting held yesterday by the Chief minister, N. Rangasamy, with the representatives of the association of sugar cane farmers attached to the mill to finalise the price. This means the farmers would get Rs. 80 more than the price paid to them last year, according to a release from the Chief Minister's office. Agriculture Minister, A. Namasivayam; the Cooperation secretary, M. Sathiyavathi; the Additional Director of Agriculture, R. Sathiyaseelan; and the Managing Director of the mill, E. Vallavan; were present at the talks. The management would incur an additional expenditure of Rs. 1 crore as a result of the decision. It would benefit 5,000 farmers.
