70,000 cops to keep vigil today

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, AUG. 14. The Delhi police in collaboration with the central para-military forces and intelligence agencies have made elaborate security arrangements to ensure that the Capital remains incident-free during the Independence Day celebrations on Sunday.

While there are no specific threats from terrorist outfits, a 70,000-strong police and para military force -- elite commandos included -- would be on duty to check any untoward activity.

Apart from the security forces, hospitals and fire services have been put on alert in the Capital.

Special emphasis is being laid on security at railway stations as well as the Indira Gandhi International Airport. At least 600-odd personnel will be manning the four major railway stations, apart from a police contingent guarding the Metro rail.

In the past one-month, the Delhi police have gone through the exercise of tenant verification and checking of guesthouses and hotels in various areas of the Capital. Quick reaction teams will be deployed at vital installations and other sensitive places to deal with any "fidayeen" attack. VIPs routes, as usual, would be under air surveillance with anti-aircraft guns.

The area around Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate has been declared out of bounds for the public in view of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's visit there tomorrow to pay homage at the martyrs' memorial.
