Alumni feted at IIT convocation

NEW DELHI, AUG. 14. At the 35th annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi held today, a total of 1,320 degrees were conferred on students, that included 328 for B. Tech., 82 for M.Sc., 598 for M. Tech., 78 for MBA and 87 for Ph.D, in the presence of alumni and faculty members.

On the occasion, "Distinguished Alumni Awards" were presented to Prof. Madhu Sudan, Padmasree Warrior and Akhil Gupta for their "contributions as thought and knowledge leaders" in their respective fields. Similarly, Prof. CNR Rao and G Madhavan Nair were honoured with the Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) for their outstanding contribution to science and technology.

A 1987 IIT-Delhi alumnus, Prof. Sudan is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US while Ms. Warrior of 1982 batch is the Senior Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer at Motorola. Mr. Gupta, a 1973 alumnus, is the Chief Executive Officer (Corporate Development) at Reliance Infocomm.

Prof. Rao is currently the Linus Pauling Research Professor and Honorary President of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore. Mr. Nair, a leading technologist in the field of space research, is the Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Secretary in the Department of Space.

Among the awards for students, the President's Gold Medal was bagged by Varun Gupta while the Director's Gold Medal to the Best All-Rounder was given to Aditya Jhulka. The Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma medal to M.Tech student was won by Joshi Kaushal Dhimant.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest, Rajat Gupta, a 1971 IIT-Delhi alumni and senior partner, McKinsey and Company, highlighted the contributions made by the Institute to the Indian society as well as to the world and appreciated its progress made over the years.

Conferring the degrees, R.S. Sirohi, IIT-Delhi Director, said the Institute was today considered among the leading institutions in the world for technical education. Prof. GSK Menon, Chairman, Board of Governor, IIT-Delhi, was also present on the occasion.
