Uneasy calm on SV Arts College campus

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI, AUG. 14. After yesterday's battle between the police and students, an uneasy calm prevails on the campus of the TTD-run Sri Venkateswara Arts College.

Police pickets have been posted but negotiations could not make much headway because of the intervening second Saturday and Sunday when the college and the TTD remain closed.

The controversial warden of the hostel, Christopher is in the eye of a storm. Talks would however resume on Monday when a decision on the main demand of the striking students -- removal of the warden -- is expected to be taken.

Suicide attempt

It may be recalled that trouble was sparked on the campus when students took to the streets enraged over the suicide attempt by hosteler and final year psychology student, Suresh, by consuming a heavy dose of sleeping pills. In a suicide note addressed to his parents he held the warden responsible for his action as he allegedly kept him running from pillar to post by not allotting him a seat in the hostel. Student leaders told mediapersons that the warden, said to be a relative of the Chief Minister, Rajasekhar Reddy, was harassing the students.

A couple of Circle Inspectors and SIs were injured in stone throwing by students and several students were hurt when police swooped down on them to remove their road blockade.

Police have taken into custody two research scholars from SV University for allegedly inciting the Arts College students.

Monitoring of situation

The Additional SP, Ch. Ravinder Reddy, who is monitoring the situation has said that the police would be firm in dealing with the `outsiders' who were behind the incident.

The BJP and the BJYM have in separate statements criticised the TTD authorities for dilly-dallying over the issue of sacking of the warden just because he is a relation of the Chief Minister.
