This Day That Age
The President has awarded the title of Bharat Ratna to Mr. C. Rajagopalachari, former Chief Minister of Madras, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-President, and Dr. C.V. Raman, eminent scientist. The award is for exceptional service towards the advancement of art, literature and science and in recognition of public service of the highest order. The names of the recipients of this award, and also of Padma Vibhushan have been published in a Gazette of India (Extraordinary) issued on the Independence Day. The five recipients of Padma Vibhushan (Pahela Varg) are Mr. B.G. Kher, Indian High Commissioner in London, Mr. V.K. Krishnan Menon, India's representative at the U.N., Mr. Nandalal Bose, famous Indian painter, Dr. Satyendra Nath Bose, eminent scientist, and Dr. Zakir Hussain, leading educationist. Mr. Rajagopalachari, Dr. Radhakrishnan and Dr. C.V. Raman are the first recipients of the Bharat Ratna. The Padma Vibhushan is awarded for distinguished public service in any field including service rendered by Government servants. Among the recipients of Padma Vibhushan (Dusra Varg) are Poet Vallathol, artist Jamini Roy and singer Shrimati M.S. Subbulakshmi.
