GAZA CITY, AUG. 15. Any progress in the West Asia peace process is dependent on the release of all the 8,000 Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails, said the Prime Minister, Ahmed Qurei, today. In a statement released to mark the start of an open-ended hunger strike by the prisoners, Mr. Qurei said their plight was one of his administration's top priorities. ``The release of all the prisoners is an essential condition for any solution or progress in the peace process. The Government regards the prisoners issue as being at the top of its list of priorities.'' A first wave of about half of the Palestinian prisoner population began refusing food today while others were expected to join the protest later in the week if there was no sign of their demands being met. The Palestinians say that the Israeli authorities should regard all detenus as prisoners of war who are accorded rights under the Geneva Convention. AFP
