BELLARY, AUG. 15. A colourful parade, march past by students of various schools, and honouring freedom fighters marked the 58th Independence day celebrations at the district stadium here on Sunday. M.P. Prakash, Minister for Revenue and district in-charge Minister, unfurled the national flag. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prakash said that the coalition Government would soon introduce welfare programmes for the uplift of 38 per cent of the population that was still below the poverty line. He also exhorted people to strive hard for the development of the nation. Freedom fighters, Rangaiah Shetty and I. Basavaraj, were honoured on the ocassion. Mother of Manjunath, the jawan who died recently in Jammu and Kashmir, was also honoured. G. Karunakar Reddy, MP; G. Somashekar Reddy, municipal president; G. Umesh, president of the zilla panchayat; Sudha Rani, vice-president; K.C.Kondaiah, B. Sriramulu, K.S.L. Swamy, all legislators; Zahir Ahmed, chairman of Bellary Urban Development Authority, S.N. Jayaram, Deputy Commissioner, G.S. Shivaswamy, chief executive officer; and M.V. Gaikwad, Additional Superintendent of Police, were present. Our Chitradurga Staff Correspondent reports: D. Manjunath, Minister for Higher Education, has urged people to fight against the communal and divisive forces, which are a great threat to the sovereignty and integrity of our country. After hoisting the national flag at 58th Independence Day celebrations here on Sunday, he expressed his satisfaction over the achievements in food production, social justice, and science and technology sectors. He felicitated N.J. Devaraja Reddy, expert in rainwater harvesting, and H.N. Thipperudra Swamy, editor of a local daily on the occasion. Toppers in various exams and talented youngsters in various fields were also honoured. Students from several schools and colleges presented cultural programmes echoing national spirit. G.H. Thippa Reddy and H. Anjaneya, MLAs; M.A. Sadiq, Deputy Commissioner; S.H. Vijay Kumar, head quarter's assistant to Deputy Commissioner; G.B. Chebbi, Superintendent of Police; Girija Pujari Ningappa, president and H. Nagaraj, vice-president of zilla panchayat; Naryanaswamy, chief executive officer, and a host of freedom fighters participated.
