DUBAI, AUG. 15. The head of a prominent Indian school in Jeddah was released from a two-week police custody after the intervention of Indian diplomats, media reports said. Yousuf Khan Jaweed, managing committee chairman of the International Indian School, was arrested on July 31 in connection with the payment of fees to a local lawyer. Dr. Jaweed was conditionally released from detention for a period of three months after diplomats from the Indian Embassy and the Consulate-General met officials of the Foreign Ministry and the Makkah Governorate a number of times, Saudi Gazette reported. The power of attorney given to lawyer Yousuf A Al-Qqyyin, who was initially paid Saudi Riyals 75,000 to represent the school in an ownership dispute over the institution's premises, was withdrawn before the end of term of the school's then chairman Abdul Rahim in June 2002. His successor Dr. Jaweed chose to appoint another lawyer to take up the case, which the school lost. UNI
