HYDERABAD, AUG. 15. Will the fabulous jewels of the Nizam return to the Salar Jung Museum again? It appears so if the efforts of the Hyderabad MP, Asaduddin Owaisi, are any indication. He plans to raise the issue during the United Progressive Alliance meeting at Delhi on August 18. "The jewels belong to Hyderabad and the Salar Jung Museum is the proper place to display them," Mr. Owaisi said after inaugurating a special exhibition on "Glimpses of Indian Independence." The legendary collection, comprising 173 pieces of gems and jewellery, was displayed for the first time at the museum in November 2001. Mr. Owaisi felt the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was enough to provide security to the jewellery for permanent display at the Salar Jung Museum. The Majlis leader criticised talks in some quarters about selling the jewels for the uplift of Telangana. "The precious stones are part of Indian heritage and cannot be frittered away," he said.
