NIZAMABAD, AUG. 15. The district administration has formulated a contingency plan to cultivate irrigated dry crops in about 23,500 hectares in the district in the event of insufficient rain in the coming few days. Addressing the gathering after unfurling the national tri-colour on the sprawling Police Grounds in connection with the 58th Independence Day celebrations here on Sunday, the Minister for Transport, S. Santhosh Reddy, said to achieve high yields, 35,645 quintals of paddy seed, 10,867 quintals of soyabean seed and 9,360 quintals of maize seed and 17,880 tonnes of nitrogenous fertilizer, 10,440 tonnes of phosphorous and 3,000 tonnes of potash were supplied to farmers at subsidised prices.
Most farmers covered
In the district, of the 23,000 farmers who were identified as non-loanees, 15,000 were given loans. Arrangements are being made to extend succour to the remaining 8,000 non-loanees in next 10 days. Besides, interest amounting Rs.23.22 crores on the borrowings taken by farmers was waived, he explained. The Minister claimed that the "helpline" set up to ascertain the woes of farmers and agricultural labourers resolved as many as 905 grievances so far. The "Varsha Bima," a new crop insurance scheme is being implemented experimentally in Navipet, Maklur, Dichpally, Yedpally and Gandhari mandals to enable farmers to tide over the losses due to low rainfall.
