Thrissur
By Our Staff Reporter
THRISSUR, AUG 15. The Minister for Civil Supplies and Cultural Affairs, G. Karthikeyan, has appealed to all sections in society to undertake a serious introspection to find out whether they were making adequate efforts to preserve the rich traditions of diversity in the country. Speaking after unfurling the national flag at the district level Independence Day celebrations at the historic Thekkinkadu Maidan here today, the Minister said India, in the past, was able to give a warm welcome to all ideologies, faiths and life-styles. It was this capacity to accept different cultures that enabled the country to make its Declaration of Independence, an occasion for the assertion on the need for peaceful and brotherly coexistence of different sections, the Minister argued.
Invasion of fear
But this culture of diversity is now coming under increasing threat. The ideal that the freedom of one section should not mean deprivation to others is being neglected frequently. Fear is invading all sections of society. It is the responsibility of not only the rulers but of all sections to uproot this fear, the Minister said. The Minister inspected the Independence Day parade and later distributed the medals announced by the Chief Minister during the last Republic Day celebrations for the police personnel for meritorious services. The District Collector, Premachandra Kurup, the Superintendent of Police, S.R. Purohit, the MLAs, freedom fighters, the Corporation Mayor, K Radhakrishnan, and other councillors participated in the celebrations.
