BANGALORE, AUG. 15. The Independence Day parade at the Field Marshal Mankeshaw Parade Ground here was notable for the good turnout of members of the public. They waved and cheered the contingents that participated in the march past and the schoolchildren who presented cultural programmes. Some 2,500 schoolchildren danced on the Parade Ground to the playing of patriotic songs. In recent years, there has been a decline in the number of people coming to the Parade Ground to participate in the Independence Day parade as also the Republic Day parade. This time, there was also some variety in the cultural programmes in that a few new schools especially those run by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike took part. Children of St. Claret High School, Jalahalli, Bangalore, walked away with the first prize in the cultural programme category for their dance "Vo Banni Sodharare Bega Banni." Their teachers Mahesh and Mamatha directed the dance. Five hundred children of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Doddaballapur, who presented the dance "Yodhare Bayasi Banni" on the devotion and dedication of the armed forces, received the second prize. Children of the Government High School of Rajajinagar Colony staged the "Bharathambe Ninage Vandane" for the third prize. Children of the Government Girls High School, Basavanagudi, and Bangalore City Corporation High Schools bagged consolation prizes. Other prize-winning contingents and schools are as follows: Group One: Border Security Force, first; City Armed Reserve Police Force, second; and City Reserved Police Force, third. Group Two: Karnataka Emergency Fire Service, first; Traffic Warden, second; and Excise Platoon, third.
