Tungabhadra dam overflows

KURNOOL: The Tungabhadra dam at Hospet overflowed on Sunday after a gap of three years. Around 25,000 cusecs was let into the river after the level in the reservoir reached 1632.61 ft holding 109.96 tmcft as against the total capacity of 111.5 tmcft.

According to information, the dam authorities released around 3,500 cusecs for power generation last night and opened floodgates on Sunday morning after the inflow into the reservoir increased to 51,310 cusecs. The total outflow from the reservoir was 33,473 cusecs. The discharge is likely to be increased in the next few days as the catchment areas of the river in Shimoga district received heavy rainfall.

The authorities alerted people living on the riverbank villages on both sides. The flood will help reopening of RDS and KC canals immediately.

Watchman killed; bikes taken away from showroom

ADILABAD: Two unidentified persons killed the watchman of a motorbike showroom at Mancherial in the wee hours of Sunday and took away two motorcycles.

According to the Mancherial Sub-Inspector, Purushottam Reddy, the duo stabbed to death the watchman, Sudarshan, and made away with motorbikes worth Rs. 70,000.

Police deny TDP charge

ANANTAPUR: The DIG of Anantapur range, N. Jayarami Reddy, and the Superintendent of Police, Anil Kumar, on Sunday termed the allegations made against the Anantapur DSP, B. Balanarasimha Reddy, by TDP leaders that the DSP was hand-in-glove with rivals of the TDP councillor, Pavurala Krishna, who was killed along with his brother by his rivals on Saturday baseless.

Talking to newsmen here, they said the TDP leaders' charge that the DSP had summoned Krishna was also wrong. Thorough verification of the allegations had proved that the DSP had never summoned Krishna.

Krishna was summoned to One Town police station by the CI concerned regarding a case. He was attacked while returning home from police station.

Call to power staff

HYDERABAD: The APGenco will give priority to providing quality and reliable power to rural consumers on par with those in urban areas. Special schemes have been prepared to expedite this process by investing Rs.1, 234 crores funded by the Rural Electrification Corporation this financial year.

This was stated here on Sunday by D.K. Panwar, Principal Secretary, energy, and chairman of APGenco after hoisting the national flag at Vidyut Soudha. He called upon engineers and staff of power utilities to strive for improving the installed capacity and providing free power to the agriculture sector as promised by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Discom employees to protest against attacks

HYDERABAD: Engineers, employees and accounts staff of the Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Corporation Limited will stage lunch-hour demonstrations on August 17 at the corporate office to protest against attacks on the departmental employees. In a representation to the chairman and managing director of the corporation on Sunday, nine associations of engineers and employees expressed displeasure at the authorities not taking any preventive action following the incidents.

Pat for film award winners

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Sunday congratulated the unit of the Telugu film `Aithe', lyric writer Suddala Ashok Teja and film critic Vasiraju Prakasam for winning National Film Awards for 2003.

In a message, he hoped that the Telugu film industry would be enriched by their future endeavours and dedicated services, according to a press release.

The release stated that Vasiraju Prakasam was the only person to get the special jury award in film journalism. Actor Chiranjeevi was all praise for Suddala Ashok Teja for winning the award. He also congratulated Vasiraju Prakasam and the Y. Chandrasekhar, director of the film `Aithe' on their achievement.

Rain likely

HYDERABAD: There was light to moderate rain at many places in Telangana on Sunday and isolated falls in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. Nalgonda and Dundigal recorded a rainfall of 3 cm each and Coonavaram 2 cm. According to the forecast, a few places in Telangana and Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East and West Godavari districts will have rain on Monday under the impact of a trough that lay over the Orissa coast. Isolated rain is likely in Rayalaseema and rest of coastal Andhra.

Invited for Beijing meet

TIRUPATI: A. Krishnaiah of SV University Chemistry department has been invited to take part in the 18th international conference on `Chemical Thermodynamics' to be held between August 17 and 21 in Beijing, China.

He will deliver a talk on "Vapour-liquid equilibrium and excess enthalpies in mixtures of dimethoxymethane and hydrocarbons" at the meet, organised by International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Ex-employee's gesture

Chittoor: A retired hostel welfare officer of Madanapalle social welfare department, S. Sarojamma, donated Rs. 1 lakh towards the social welfare fund, said the deputy director of social welfare, Raghuram. She has requested that the interest be used for welfare of the children studying in hostels of social welfare department.

Sarpanches meet

NELLORE: A meeting under the auspices of Nellore District Panchayat Sarpanches'Association, on Saturday, opposed the proposed introduction of revenue secretary system in villages. The president of State Panchayat Raj Chamber, Y. Babu Rajendraprasad, made it clear that all the 21,943 sarpanches would oppose the new system and appealed to the Government to honour the sentiments of sarpanches. The former president of District Association, P.N. Srinivasulu Reddy, presided.
