India opens campaign against Myanmar

KOLKATA, AUG. 15. Hoping to regain the LG Cup it won in 2002, India opens its campaign against Myanmar in the preliminary group `A' match at this year's edition starting at Ho Chi Minh City on August 20. The fixtures were officially released by the organiser — Gymnastics and Sports Department of HCM City — on Saturday.

The host's senior squad is the other team in the three-team group `A'. Group `B' consists of Malaysia, a selection from Korea universities and Ho Chi Minh City youth team. India plays Myanmar on August 22 while its second match against Vietnam is on August 24.

The best two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals to be held on August 26 while the final is scheduled on August 28.

Meanwhile, Ashim Biswas of Mohun Bagan was forced to opt out of the LG Cup squad with an injured knee. East Bengal forward Bijen Singh, who was one among the five stand-bys, now makes it into the squad of 20 as Biswas' replacement. Injuries had earlier ruled out five players from the initial probables including the likes of Jo Paul Ancheri, M. Suresh and Alvito D'Cunha.
