Man killed in case of mistaken identity?

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, AUG. 15. Locals beat to death an unidentified middle-aged man accusing him of injuring six persons while attempting to loot a house at knifepoint along with two accomplices at Laxmiraoguda of Shabad police station area of Ranga Reddy district on Saturday night.

However, amidst unconfirmed reports that the villagers had killed a mentally unsound person mistaking him for a thief, police have begun a detailed inquiry into the incident. "We have information that the victim was of unsound mind and spotted roaming on the street a couple of days ago. But, this has to be substantiated," the Ranga Reddy SP, G. Surya Prakash Rao, said.

Housebreak attempt

According to the villagers, a gang of three persons wielding knives tried to break into one Laxmamma's house on the village outskirts. "All three in their underwear," police said quoting eyewitnesses. When the woman raised an alarm, a neighbour, Jangaiah, came to her rescue. But, the offenders allegedly beat him up resulting in serious injuries.

Alerted by Jangaiah's cries, locals rounded up the gang. While two managed to escape, the third was caught after a chase. Five villagers sustained injuries when the alleged thief pelted stones. Angry villagers beat up the suspect black and blue killing him.

"So far, we have the version of only the villagers. Unless, any concrete evidence is collected we cannot say if it is case of mistaken identity", the Shabad Sub-Inspector, T. Surekha, said. A murder case has been registered.
