YSR chants Harithandhra Pradesh mantra

HYDERABAD, AUG 15. The seventh nursery mela organised by the Department of Horticulture got off to a start at the Public Gardens here on Sunday.

The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, inaugurating the four-day mela, said the aim was to promote greenery in the State and achieve the goal of Harithandhra Pradesh.

Interest in gardening

The event will also aim at inculcating interest in ornamental and home gardening, popularising different species of plant material suitable for the State, to create market avenues for nurserymen and to spread knowledge about garden accessories, materials and irrigation systems, all of which are on display at the mela, which will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Varieties of seed, tissue culture plants like G-9 banana, vanilla and orchids, bio-fertilisers, an Ikebana exhibition by the Ohara School of Ikebana, fruit plants, medicinal plants, flowers, various varieties of lawn grass and pottery are also part of the mela.

There are participants from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and Andhra Pradesh. State and Central government organisations like the Coconut Development Board and various NGOs too have put up stalls, with the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad's stall being among the impressive ones.

Exchange of ideas

The Commissioner of Horticulture, Anil Punetha, said there were 1,050 nurseries in the State engaged in production of plant material with an annual turnover of Rs. 375 pcrores.

The event would bring all these people together on a single platform and help them exchange ideas and techniques, he said.

The mela will conclude on August 18.
