BANGALORE, AUG. 15. Are you a first-time mother unsure about your baby's nutrition or one who needs tips on managing work and feeding the child? Young mothers and expectant women are often in a dilemma about the care of their baby, including lactation. The "Lactation Helpline", launched by a group of doctors in the city, which believes that mother's milk is the best nutrition for a newborn, hopes to dispel myths and give information on breastfeeding and other issues related to nutrition of the newborn and the lactating mother. Though the helpline was started some time ago, it expanded its activities to mark World Breast Feeding Week (August 1-7) this year. This service is available between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. from Monday through Saturday. At other times, the call would be taken by an answering machine, and the call would be returned.
Lactation clinic
One of the highlights of the helpline is that it is attached to a lactation clinic that addresses those problems of the mothers, which cannot be sorted out over the phone. The specialists will respond to the queries. According to Asha Benakappa, lactation consultant and child specialist, who is the Managing Trustee of the helpline (Ph: 26693173, 9845073130), the helpline seeks to give need-based information to mothers to help them initiate and sustain breastfeeding. "It is essential to breastfeed an infant exclusively for the first six months and in addition to other food supplements till the baby is two years of age. We want to educate the mothers about these aspects to ensure that the baby's development is not hampered," Dr. Asha told The Hindu .
