BAGALUR (BIJAPUR DIST.), AUG. 16. Police have arrested one of the four boatmen ferrying the boat, which had capsized near Ghattarga in the Bheema on Sunday. Vithal Gurulingappa Jawali of Sindagi town had fled the scene after boat capsized in the flooded river. The Sindagi police picked him up on Monday afternoon. Police claimed that the arrested had confessed that he and the other boatmen were in an inebriated condition while ferrying the boat. However, talking to group of journalists at the Sindagi Police Station, Jawali said that the accident occurred due to overloading and increased flow of water in the river. The boat, which departed Bagalur dock had almost reached the opposite bank when it capsized. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Indi Sub-Division, H.T. Krishnappa, said that there were 35 persons in the boat, and 27 of them survived. Since it was festival season at the Ghattarga on the opposite side, there was a rush to board the boat. Quarrels to board the boats are regular features during the season. Some people alleged that the policemen, who were usually deputed at the dock to regulate the ferrying, were not present on Sunday.
