This Day That Age
Guns from a Portuguese cruiser boomed and, under cover of machinegun fire, 125 troops rushed into the Terekhol enclave in Shirode on August 16 to retake the enclave liberated by satyagrahis of the National Congress (Goa) the previous day. Shortly after the firing, the Indian tricolour, which the satyagrahis had planted on the fortress, was seen going down and the Portuguese banner went up. Terekhol is separated by a small river from the mainland of Goa. The volunteers, who entered it at noon on August 15, were the third group of satyagrahis sent out by the National Congress of Goa to mark the beginning of a "do or die" struggle to throw out the Portuguese rule. After the firing incident, Mr. Peter Alvares, President of the National Congress (Goa), announced that they would not be hindered by the action of the Portuguese and more satyagrahis would be sent to Terekhol.
