SHIMOGA, AUG. 17. The Rajya Bhoo-Vidyadana Shala Jaminu Geni Raithara Horata Samithi (The action committee for tenants of the government school land) has demanded an inquiry into the returning of 11 acres of the land belonging to the government secondary school at Devangi in Tirthahalli taluk to a family that had donated the land to the school. The samithi president, Kallur Megharaj, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the Government should suspend the Deputy Commissioner, Tushar Girinath, for having restored the land to the donor family as his action was aimed at defeating the purpose of the movement which was launched to seek voluntary donation of land for government schools. He said the committee had sought the intervention of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddharamaiah, and the Revenue Minister, M.P. Prakash, in the matter. He said the pernicious tenancy system continued unabated in the case of the land donated to the government schools where tenants cultivated the land even after the tenancy was abolished with the enactment of the Land Reforms Act. Mr. Megharaj said the S.M. Krishna Government had set up a Cabinet sub-committee comprising H. Vishwanath, Kagodu Thimmappa, and H.C. Srikanthaiah to look into the demand. Even as the efforts were on to confer ownership rights of the school land on tenants, the action by the Deputy Commissioner to restore the land to the donor family went against the spirit of the movement. He warned that this action was not only likely to prompt the other donors to seek the restoration of the land which was donated by them to the government schools but deprive nearly 10,000 poor tenants the possibility of becoming the owners of such lands. He said Deputy Commissioner's action should be declared null and void. The honorary president of the samithi, Kadidal Shamanna, the general secretary, Chittaranjan Kallannavar, the organising secretary, Sureshrao Nadig, and the legal advisor, N. Manjuladevi, were present.
