Belgaum tops in implementing Jal Nirmal

BELGAUM, AUG. 17. Belgaum district tops in the implementation of the Jal Nirmal project in the State. A World Bank team, which recently visited the district, has appreciated the progress achieved in the district, Rajender Kumar Kataria, Chief Executive Officer of the Belgaum Zilla Panchayat, has said.

Mr. Kataria said the project was being implemented in the district for the past three years. The pilot schemes under the project were implemented in 14 gram panchayats covering 22 villages in the district. About Rs. 12 crores had been spent so far on these schemes. Under batch 1, multi-village schemes, Saral Jal scheme, and school sanitation, were in full swing in 49 gram panchayats. The progress of these schemes was reviewed at the District Project Monitoring Committee meeting recently.

Mr. Kataria said every school would get Rs. 1.5 lakhs for sanitation, including drinking water supply, toilet construction, compound wall, garden development and roof top rainwater harvesting. The scheme would be implemented in all schools in villages where Jal Nirmal project had been taken up with the contribution of 15 per cent of the funds from the beneficiaries. Under the Saral Jal schemes, 75 schemes were implemented under pilot phase in Raibag and Bailhongal taluks. Impressed by the programme, the Government gave green signal to scale up the scheme following which 450 such schemes would be taken up shortly to extend the benefits more communities in the district.

Mr. Kataria said all gram panchayat offices would be upgraded. About Rs. 3 lakhs would be given as incentive to every gram panchayat in the district to improve the working environment. The selection of the gram panchayat under batch 3 programmes would be done shortly.
