THANJAVUR, AUG.17. A target of 3.8 lakh hectares has been fixed to come under samba cultivation this year in the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam, according to Jagmohan Singh Raju, Commissioner of Agriculture. This is against the last year's target of 2.75 lakh hectares, Mr. Raju, who was touring the three districts, told presspersons here recently that farmers had been advised to raise specific varieties in specific localities during specific periods. Officials of the Agriculture Department would personally visit 1956 revenue villages in these districts between August 16 and September 15. All agriculture extension centres had been asked to remain open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5.45 p.m. during the above period to sell inputs required by farmers. In case of extraordinary difficulty, farmers can contact R. Navaneetha Krishnan, Joint Director of Agriculture, Thanjavur district, over the mobile phone 98653-24623, C.
