Tuticorin
By Our Staff Reporter
TUTICORIN, AUG. 17. Sekar, Inspector General of Police, Civil Supplies CID, today visited the godown, from where ration rice, worth Rs. 3 crores, about to be smuggled, was seized on Monday. The District Revenue Officer, K. Bhaskaran, who conducted a pre-dawn raid and seized the rice, accompanied him. Mr. Sekar, who also inspected the rice loaded in the wagons, told presspersons that the police were probing the nexus between officials and the smugglers. He also held discussions with the Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, Mr. Bhaskaran and other officials. Though the officials are tight-lipped about the incident, sources said the preliminary investigation revealed that the rice, meant for the public distribution system and the `food-for-work' programme in the southern districts, was brought to Tuticorin for being transported to Naya Asadpur near New Delhi. Moreover, the use of heavy equipment in the `food-for-work' schemes could have saved the contractors a huge quantity of rice, which they might have sold to the smugglers, the sources said.
