TUMKUR, AUG. 17. The former President of the Tumkur Zilla Panchayat, Jampaiah, said on Monday that not much progress had been achieved in the implementation of the Centre's Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Scheme in Pavagada taluk of Tumkur district. Participating in a meeting here under the Karnataka Development Programme, he said the quality of education had not improved in the taluk. Referring to a report by the Block Education Officer, Krishnamurthy, on the implementation of the scheme in the taluk, Mr. Jampaiah said the objective of the scheme was not to provide toilets alone. Many schools faced a shortage of teachers though the scheme was launched in the taluk two years ago. The officials had failed in tackling the problem, he added. In his report, Mr. Krishnamurthy stated that seven classrooms, 85 toilets, and 65 drinking water supply units had been provided under the scheme. Chandrakala, Agriculture Officer, denied that there was a shortage of seeds in the taluk. She said the department had met the demand for seeds. Steps would be taken to control the pest attack on the groundnut crop, she added. Prakash, engineer, said the Tumkur Zilla Panchayat had not approved the action plan for 2004-05 and hence, development works could not be taken up.
