BELGAUM, AUG. 17 . An inmate of the Hindalga Central Jail on the outskirts of Belgaum allegedly committed suicide on Monday after the jail authorities did not allow him to see the body of his father, Shrimant Donkappa Keri, who died of cardiac arrest in the jail. The incident came to light on Tuesday. According to the Jail Superintendent, M.S. Suresh Babu, Shrimant Donkappa, who had AIDS, was suffering from chest pain for some time. He died on Monday and the body was handed over to his kin in the evening. Mr. Babu said that Shrimant Donkappa's son, Hanumant Donkappa, committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope from the window of the toilet because of frustration and grief as he had mentioned in a note. Meanwhile, Hanumant Donkappa's brother, Subash Donkappa, who was released on emergency parole to perform the last rites of their father, told presspersons that his brother committed suicide because he was not allowed to see their father's body. However, Mr. Babu said that in such circumstances, only one person would be allowed under the provisions of emergency parole. The body of Hanumant Donkappa had been sent to the District Government Hospital for post-mortem, he added. Shrimant Donkappa and his four sons and three nephews from Yadwad in Gokak taluk were sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case on June 19, 2002.
